MONSIEUR HUBLOT - THE ICONIST

My freelance job for Axel Springer’s The Iconist led me to a Swiss watch factory in Geneva again. This time we haven’t focused on the production process but on the man behind the brand. Together with the journalist J. Philip Rathgen we met Jean-Claude Biver. At this moment he was the CEO of that company. Just four month later he resigned from the job.

For the first time I was hired as film maker and photographer. First the photos and the three chapters have been released seperately and exclusively for the 7th issue of the iPad-only magazine The Iconist. Later they were published as one film at Welt Online. Finally I added titles and credits for a vimeo release.

OFFENSIVE FRÜHE CHANCEN

Here you can see my first official job for the german government. I was asked by Ramboll to produce a little video about a support program to improve language in kindergarten. It is shown as opener video at more than 20 conferences in whole germany and on the official website. Maybe it looks like an easy job to some of you. But shooting with kids could be really difficult. In fact it wasn’t.

NEVER ENOUGH TIME - THE ICONIST

I work as freelance video producer for Axel Springer’s Die Welt. So I was asked to make videos for their sub-project The Iconist. They say it’s the first iPad-only magazine in Germany, maybe in the world? In March 2011 the 4th issue was released which has included exclusively my five-part video report about the Swiss watch manufacturer Patek Philippe. Later the videos were published here also. Above you see a montage of the five parts.

Since september 2009 I am working as a freelance video journalist for Die Welt. Beside the daily online news business I get more and more opportunities to produce videos in my own style.

The printed special edition for the 20th anniversary of the german reunion was designed by german painter Georg Baselitz. I have produced two videos accompanying this event. Later I merged them to one video.

I was invited by Yvan Rodic to document his five-cities-five-parties-trip in the course of The Subject60 Experiment presented by Volvo. The tour which was accompanied by swedish popstar Lykke Li started in Berlin (video above) and continued in London, Milan, Paris and Madrid. Maybe some of you know Yvan as the Face Hunter. It was fun to work with him!

THE PICTURES DON’T MOVE

I love the power of static camera and long shots in cinema and I experimented a lot with that little form (watch also 1 Minute Berlin, Harzer Straße, FilmKritikFilm, Minutes In Russia and Sicily).

So in 2009 I started together with Thomas Friedrich the online art project The Pictures Don’t Move to share movies without editing and camera movement. Everyone is invited to our Vimeo group to add films that fit these simple rules:

1. No camera movement (zoom, pan, …)
2. No editing (cut, time manipulation, …)
3. No performance (acting, dancing, …)
4. Original sound (no music, …)
5. At least 30sec long!

And it works great. Now we have nearly 600 members, 400 videos and some deep discussions about all this. In the beginning our group was featured by the Vimeo staff as one of the three “groups we like”. One staff member wrote:

Sometimes the best videos are ones where not a lot happens… The Pictures Don’t Move is a fantastic Group that celebrates the pure experience of capturing life on video.

CHECKDISOUT

Matthias Weber has established the debating club Checkdisout for discussions about culture, media, art and society on a high level but less snobbery in Hamburg in 2008. Always some of the most inspiring leaders of each topic came together to talk about future and downward trends of the music, publishing, advertising and television industry or at least urban development.

Since the very first event Matthias asked me for a documentation. So I did. And I always tried to capture these 2-hours-talks in a fresh and informative way for a distracted web audience.

ELECTRONIC BEATS TV

Together with Simon Ruschmeyer I produced several videos for Electronic Beats TV a platform for electronic music and lifestyle which is run by T-Mobile. First we did a Popkomm web video special in three parts. In that case I was responsible only for the preproduction. Simon did the shooting and editing with an additional crew while I was celebrating my marriage :P

A month later we both produced some promotional videos for the Electronic Beats Festival like the video above.

WATCHBERLIN

From January to June 2008 I was senior editor and video producer for the ambitious experiment WatchBerlin of the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group. The online video magazine presented three exclusive videos per day out of Germany’s capital. They decorated us amongst others with the LEAD-Award but at the end of 2008 the project was completely taken offline. You stil find some of the videos on YouTube.

This is a little collection of my favorites I was involded (please watch also 1 Minute Berlin):

Lorenzo, portrait of a Berlin-Mitte guy (above)
A short portrait about Lorenz Peters, a well known party maker in Berlin’s nineties. He tells us about his heavy drug experiences and how he survived the 20 years of hardcore clubbing in Berlin. For that portrait I did the camera and the editing. The complete clip was produced within 15hours. Shooting in the afternoon and editing the whole night.

100x Berlin in Super8
In June 2008 an exhibition started with old amateur films about Berlin made on Super8 material. Jürgen Lossau collected thousand of films of every past decade (war, wall, east, west,…) from flea markets. In an old brewery cellar he screened 100 of them at the same time with 8mm-projectors. Impressive sound and scary images…

Klaus Wagenbach is a famous german publisher and collector of devotional objects by author Franz Kafka. When the FAZ-journalist Volker Weidermann visited him in his Berlin appartment in 2008 Wagenbach presented him some originals of world-famous photographs of Kafka.

It was March 2007 when we decided to travel to Sicily for leaving the annoying Berlin winter. Sicily was beautiful but also very cold. This series of four videos were shot around the beautiful village Scopello. Later I realised that the video above was inspired by photographies of Hiroshi Sugimoto. And it seems that the idea of The Pictures Don’t Move was allready in my mind…

JEWISH MUSEUM BERLIN - SIGHTSEEKER

In fall 2007 I have produced some clips for the german start-up Sightseeker Medien. As the name suggests they sell video portraits about sigths. For my video about the Jewish Museum in Berlin designed by Daniel Libeskind I was honoured with the Int. Isabella Bird Video Award for the “Best video in September 2007”. The video has been also featured by the german online project architekturclips.de. The music is borrowed by Philip Glass. Some camera shots where added by Tobias Kipp. Thanks, men!

Below you see two other clips in this experimental series. One is about the Neue Wache, the second about the Room of Silence in Berlin.

INTERFILM BERLIN

In November 2006 I produced 10 video podcasts about the International Short Film Festival interfilm in Berlin featured on their official website.

I was totally free in production and had absolutely no budget. So I tried different styles and ways to capture the atmosphere of the festival without showing much film snippets. It was a funny experiment for both sides, the festival people and me.

MINUTES IN RUSSIA

After I had been awarded the Palm sécateur d’Or for my graduate thesis film Der Statist / A Walk-On I was invited to join the jury of the International Kansk Video Festival in September 2006. Please read about the great idea of the festival in the middle of Siberia on their website: www.festival-cannes.ru

Later I have finished this nine-part-series that shows some “Minutes in Russia” (MIR) I captured on my trip. Every film is a snippet of one-minute-short “reality”. One shot, one minute. A concept I later enhanced with The Pictures Don’t Move.

Above you can see one minute in the headquarter of the festival organizer Videodom Studio in Moscow before leaving to the airport with only some DVDs, a notebook and some posters for the festival in Kansk.

WOHNZIMMER WM

While the FiFa Worldcup 2006 took place in Germany some friends in Hamburg organized the public/private WohnzimmerWM. This alternative to the official public screenings was supported by the local housing cooperative SAGA GWG. I was asked to produce a documentation about this idealistic project which original started 2002 in Weimar. The 12-part video podcast was downloaded more than 70.000 times. I was experimenting with video podcast in 2006 when I found this strange house in Berlin-Neukölln. Years ago this street was divided by “the wall”. The video was my mental kickoff for the issue later results in the Vimeo group The Pictures Don’t Move.

mirko, glückwunsch zu diesen 70 sekunden video. hat mich wirklich sehr beeindruckt aufgrund der ruhe und einfachheit und ästhetik, die da drin steckt. davon würde ich gerne noch mehr sehen. es gibt sicher jede menge eigenartiger oder auch ganz normaler orte in berlin, die das bild der stadt ausmachen. ich finde den detaillierten blick sehr schön. weil darin auch etwas beunruhigendes steckt. das gefühl, dass irgendetwas bald paasieren wird. dieser gedanke begleitet mich seit ein paar monaten, wenn ich durch berlin gehe. das gefühl, dass es irgendwo gleich explodiert. dazu passt auch der titel einer platte, die ich gerade ständig hören muss: “die tiere sind unruhig”. das finde ich greifbarer als die kleine reihe über ein plakat, dass scheinbar aus einem sehr einfalls- und lustlosen pitch hervorgegangen ist. diese “ich bin doch nicht blöd”-kampagnen rufen doch nur noch gähnen hervor. ein plakat mehr aus der reihe, uninteressant. das sollte man nicht weiter mit bedeutung aufladen, auch wenn der jesus-spruch einen konfrontativen charakter hat. aber das sollen nur meine meinung und ein paar lose gedanken sein. grüße, peter

Aha. Ein Foto auf dem Vögel zwitschern, der Wind weht, Leute vorbei gehen, eine andere Sprache sprechen, ein Kind singt und ein Auto vorbei fährt, das die Beschaffenheiten der Straße demonstriert. Ein Foto auf dem 70 Sekunden vergehen. Aha. Ich sehe gar keinen Grund mich zu rechtfertigen, warum das ein Film und kein Foto geworden ist. Dein Argument ist kein Argument. Trotzdem danke, für diesen Einwurf ;)

Together with my wife I tried some sort of alternative journalism with video podcasts in 2006. In this five clips we spontaneously asked passengers waiting for their next train about a manipulated advertising in Berlin-Kreuzberg’s underground station Mehringdamm. A graffiti was added that said “Jesus loves you not!”…

Super, ich will mehr davon sehen. Kleine Schnipsel aus der Welt. Tolle Leute, jeder mit einer anderen Sicht und wie mit Worten gekämpft wird, ist beeindruckend. Sei es auf dem Plakat, sei es in der Auseinandersetzung oder ganz einfach im Ringen mit dem eigenen Sprachzentrum. Kompliment, schöne Interviews, alle drei, Inhaltlich und Visuell. So jetzt ist Schluß mit der Lobhudelei.

Nicht nur das, auch die Blickwinkel. Die alte Frau, die völlig resistent gegen die eigentliche Werbeaussage, durch das Plakat hindurchsieht, sozusagen, und nur die Entstehung betrachtet. Die Tatsache, dass Eltern ihr Kind für so etwas hergeben. Scheinbar beschäftigt sie sich mit dem Thema, wie Eltern in der heutigen Zeit mit ihren Kindern umgehen und Kindern allgemein in der heutigen Zeit. Als ältere Dame ist ihr Blick da sicher anders. Wunderbar, sowas in einer kurzen Szene sehen zu können. Toll.
